The ETA Strategy: Three Practical Steps to Overcome Adversity

Many people become intellectually paralyzed during disasters--both natural and manmade (eg the market crash). One of the keys to success is to have a strategy and practice it before getting into such situations. This framework can provide a sense of direction and focus which can lead to hope. The ETA Strategy™ provides a powerful and effective framework to move forward and make a difference.

"E" = 3D-Evaluation. In other words, the first thing that I do is look around. Often times people forget to do this because the ONLY thing that they see is is problem in front of them. The 3D view includes the following:

  • Define the Problem.
    • Don't quickly assume that you understand the problem. Take a look at it.
    • Ask yourself some questions.
      • What is the problem?
      • Who does it impact?
      • Why did it happen?
      • When do I need to do something about it?
      • Is it true?
  • Determine the Gap.
    • Take an inventory of the resources that you have available.
    • Figure out what you need.
    • Determine the gap between what you have and what you need.
    • Can you adapt what you have to be used differently and better meet the need.
  • Derive Different Options.
    • Consider different solutions to the problem.
    • What if you do the opposite of what first crosses your mind
    • What have others done in similar situations?
    • Have I ever faced similar situations?

"T" = Try Something. It doesn't sound that complex because it isn't. It is simple but it may not be easy. One of the most important keys to this concept is this:

" There is no such thing as failure, only feedback."

You will notice that this is loop...a feedback loop. The next letter addresses that.

"A" = Assess Learning. Following any attempt there is going to be some sort of feedback. It will present an opportunity to learn. It is unlikely that the center of the target will be hit on the first try. The usual process (and the one with much more learning) involves trying, learning and adjusting.

As we go around and around the circle by 3D-Evaluation, Trying and Assessing over and over, we will move in closer to the bull's eye.

Because of the commitment to adapt and learn we are now able to refocus and once again challenge ourselves to "Define the Problem", "Determine the Gap" and "Derive Different Options".
