These are some of the photos of my experience on the front lines of Haiti during the first couple of weeks after the earthquake. (Warning: some of these are graphic.)

Just wait 'till you've watched the video embedded in this blog entry. I've watched it a couple of times now and the more I ponder it, the more significant I think it is. At first, it made me laugh. I had to. I couldn't help it. But, carry it around in your noggin for a couple of days and you might start to think differently about the impact you could have at work if you were fully engaged.

In 1933, during his inaugural address, Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

He went on to say, "Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. The joy and moral stimulation of work no longer must be forgotten in the mad chase of evanescent profits. These dark days will be worth all they cost us if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered unto but to minister to ourselves and to our fellow men."

I don't think that you will be able to look at things the same after watching this. He is an outstanding example of resiliency. He remained committed, he believed that he could impact his situation and he learned from his feedback (so to speak). What are your thoughts?

The damage in Omaha from the recent severe storms was immense but the impact of generous people was even greater. Governor Dan Heineman said, “All of Nebraska ought to be proud of the citizens I saw up there. Neighbors coming in and helping neighbors. The resiliency and the spirit of our citizens is just amazing.”

Our medical team had a similar experience in New Orleans after Katrina. People came out of the woodwork to help. Even those that lost everything were reaching out to help others. In no time it became clear to me that it was not about resources. It was about heart. Those that choose, in the midst of challenging and overwhelming times, to put others first transform hopeless situations to situations where hope is reborn.
